CRAFTSMANSHIP VALUE IN CHINA

End of study dissertation

I wrote this dissertation during my last year of a Transcultural Design program in Shanghai. The aim was for me to explore and understand the notion of craftsmanship in the Chinese culture. For that, I focused on ceramic craftsmanship. During an immersive trip to Jingdezhen, I have been observing, questioning, learning and heaven making some ceramics with old Masters. It took me a while to put this piece all together but it was a rich experience, I will never forget.

I was successively an explorer, a researcher, a photographer, a conceptual thinker, a writer and a graphic designer

HERE ARE FEW LINES FROM THE INTRODUCTION

"In the context of a general return to craftsmanship and “savoir-faire” in Europe, this dissertation is about people’s relation to it; in a city that puts development first, and gets rid of heritage in favor of modernity. This essay looks into the roots of Chinese culture through ceramic craftsmanship to see the evolution of its status in a country that has been developing very fast in recent years. This writing will show how Chinese people value their heritage. How they deal with it in their everyday life when mass-produced products take over the market."
